We wish to give birth to good looking and healthy kittens, not a very original idea!!
Instead let’s see how we intend to do it.
First of all, not to have male is an intentional choice. Our experience in dogs breeding taught us to have our females been served away from home (the breeding should be done by
a male unknown by the female). We think than the same male doesn’t match with all the females. We have the habit to choose a genitor depending on his morphology and on his genotype
(his genetic potential).
The male must bring an improvement to the weakness of the female without loosing her best qualities. We will choose a male for each of our female and if we have to we will look for him very fare.
Regarding the morphology (phenotype) we do not pretend to improve the race, a lot of well skilled breeders have been working on it for a long time and give birth to the gorgeous cats of
the shows. But we will try not to loose these skills.
We will make an effort with a standard that I really care about: to pass on the rarity and the bloom of our cats beard.
*With Nikko we would like to give birth to dazzling gingers. She will be served by plain ginger males (we will look for polygene that can accrue colours strength).
*For the silver crème of Nancy we will try to perpetuate beard as pale as her by marring her only to males with the same dilution (a colour brighter than the original colour) and the same silver
Let’s talk about the most important: the genetic potential of our cats.
Inbreeding has always been seen as something wrong; it’s maximized the defects of a line, decreased the immunity of the cats…
We do not practise inbreeding. We will allow ourselves an inbreeding rate of 0 for at least the next four generation of the pedigree.
But if we want to improve the health potential of our lines we will have to do better; along the generations we will have to decrease the entire inbreeding rate (right to
the beginning of the race). For that we will alternate line-breeding (within a same line) with if possible some mixed breeding with males from another line to bring a new genetic mixing.
For the study of our Maine Coons we use a priceless tool: the database which allows us to figure out these several rates.
